Early black Panzer wrap for a Großdeutschland Leutnant
Information
Early second type Heer piped collar black Panzer wrap for a Großdeutschland Leutnant.
This gorgeous wrapper found in Austria has had some light restoration but features all of its original insignia and is a lightly used example! It is a second type Heer black Panzer wrap for a Großdeutschland Leutnant, with a pink wool piped collar, the wrap body made of dense high quality black wool, lined in cotton twill and with pockets. The wrap was shortened to a 3 button closure as was popular with officers. The interior has a officers dagger hanger sewn into the lining up to the lower armpit area, the belt hook support straps were period removed along with the tie tunnel cords. The closure buttoning tabs are also made of cotton twill, the interior is stamped in purple ink with the maker “ROMEI” then underneath are black ink stamps for the wraps sizes and a H.38 depot stamp for Hamburg 1938. The wrap has three large black composite buttons at the front closure and with smaller black composite buttons for closure of lapel, for fastening button tabs and on each cuff, all buttons remain and are originally and tightly sewn, cuff lining components are of blue ribbed cotton.
There is a black painted steel hook and eye at the throat, the large pointed collar is piped in bright pink coloured wool, the Panzer collar patches are piped in the same material and each is factory machine straight stitch applied to the collar, each collar patch has an aluminium Totenkopf skull with round flat prongs which penetrate the collar. The Panzer national emblem is a hand applied officers bullion eagle on green felt backing. The matching shoulder straps also have the same rosa coloured wool piping and are the slip on type each adorned with a gold gilt washed Großdeutschland officers “1st” type cypher, each strap is held in place with silver screw in shoulder strap buttons. There are original loops for a ribbon bar and underneath loops for several awards. The Right sleeve has a very nice officers quality “4th” pattern Großdeutschland cuff title sewn by hand attached.
The wrap was worn but shows minor use, The wrap retains virtually all of the nap to the cloth with only several small moth bites which are not very noticeable and do not detract from the wrap, there are no other damages that we can see. Overall this is a very nice early wrap with piped collar to a elite unit which are very difficult to find and extremely desirable!
